Quake and Tsunami Strike Solomon Islands

Tuesday, April 3, A.D. 2007

Monday's massive earthquakes and ensuing tsunami near the Solomon Islands have killed at least 20 people and left thousands homeless in this isolated and impoverished Pacific island chain. At least 13 villages were destroyed along with hospitals, schools and other infrastructure in the most severely affected Choiseul and Western provinces. Recent civil unrest in the Solomons and their remote location make response to the disaster challenging.

According to Christian World Service (the relief and development organization of the churches in New Zealand), there is an urgent need for food, water, medical care and shelter, and there will be significant recovery and rehabilitation needs as well. CWS-New Zealand is a member of the Action by Churches Together (ACT) network and a partner colleague of Church World Service (CWS). Week of Compassion is now in touch with CWS and ACT to explore the best routes to provide relief and recovery assistance.
