Wicked Winter Weather Wallops U.S.

Thursday, January 18, A.D. 2007

The wicked winter weather system that walloped much of the nation from California to New England has now claimed over 60 lives – mostly from traffic accidents caused by icy road conditions. Utility workers continue to work around the clock to restore power to hundreds of thousands of people who remain without electricity, especially in Texas and the Plains and Midwest states. Emergency relief workers are also expressing concern for the elderly poor and for small farmers and ranchers who are struggling to get hay to stranded livestock.

Week of Compassion has made an emergency grant to the Christian Church in Nebraska to respond to needs in Disciples congregations and to support the statewide ecumenical response in the Cornhusker state. WOC is also sharing the latest information we are receiving with Disciples regional and area offices in the hardest hit states and similarly requesting information on impacted Disciples congregations and members and possible responses WOC can make. Because so much utility service has been interrupted by downed phone and electric lines, WOC would be extremely grateful to receive information about the impact of the ice storms on Disciples congregations and members from our network of update subscribers. If you have such information, please e-mail us at johnnywray@ecunet.org, agopp@woc.disciples.org, or ecleveland@woc.disciples.org. Thanks!
