DOMESTIC DISASTER RESPONSE & PREPAREDNESS

Week of Compassion is here to help: before, during, and after disaster.

Week of Compassion offers resources and training opportunities to help congregations prepare for and respond to disasters.

Immediately following disasters in the United States and Canada, Week of Compassion works through local congregations and regions to provide guidance, connections, and resources for navigating disaster response. We invest the majority of our disaster response resources in long-term recovery, primarily for the purpose of repairing and rebuilding homes. In coordination with Disciples colleagues and ecumenical partners, Week of Compassion also supports opportunities for Disciples to offer hands-on assistance.

Learn more about our ongoing responses below.

Water Crisis

9/1/2022

2022 - Jackson, Mississippi

Flooding of the Pearl River caused the failure of the water treatment plant in Jackson, Mississippi. The city's nearly 200,000 residents were completely without water for a time, and as water returned at low pressure, it was still unsafe for drinking, cooking, washing dishes, and bathing.

HOW DISCIPLES ARE INVOLVED
Local Contacts: Great River Region, Mississippi VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster)

Early Response: Week of Compassion provided assistance through the Regional office and their relationships with Working Together Mississippi and New Horizons Church to provide water and other needed supplies. Week of Compassion staff also worked to connect partners with resources and assistance information.

Ongoing Engagement: We are in conversation with ecumenical partners about long-term needs, stemming from both the water crisis and the flood that caused it.

HOW TO HELP
Volunteer:  TBD.

Give to Week of Compassion: Designate US Storms

Pray: Continue to pray for those affected by this crisis and for our Week of Compassion partners.

Advocate: The infrastructure in many of our cities and towns is vulnerable to similar crises, especially in places where systemic racism has led to decades of neglect and disinvestment. Advocate for mitigation efforts that specifically address infrastructure such as water and power systems.
