supporting partners in shifting circumstances

Dear Disciples,

We are often asked about our global partners and how their work is impacted by the policies of the U.S. administration. We will continue to share the stories of their transformative work, even as we listen to them and discern the best ways to go about our mission – working with partners to alleviate suffering throughout the world. Thank you for the ways you connect with and invest in the ministry of Week of Compassion.

Currently, all our partners are facing significant challenges in humanitarian work, both in development programs and refugee resettlement.

in Indonesia, a young woman becomes her own hero

Picture
The Republic of Indonesia is made up of 17,000 islands with nearly 280 million residents; it shares land and sea borders with nearly a dozen other nations, and is home to hundreds of ethnic and language groups.

Hanifah is a 23 year old Afghan refugee who arrived to this island nation as a teenager, separated from her family, and today is grateful for the care and support of the ASPIRASI Project run by Yayasan Cita Wadah Swadaya (YCWS) with support from Week of Compassion.

Special Offering 2025 : a THANK YOU + a Mission Moment (Chicago CC)

2/25/2025

Picture
Hello Disciples!
Week of Compassion is in our Special Offering season and we want to say THANK YOU.

Your gifts to Week of Compassion continue to serve the most vulnerable people across the world. Every day, we witness weather-related disasters in the United States and Canada, an ongoing immigration and refugee crisis, and international conflicts that continue to disrupt nations and lives. The impacts are profound and long-lasting, and recovery will last for years to come. We are grateful for every one of you – those who take the long view, who know that God’s goodness is a constant presence and guide, and who understand that the work of compassion is work we do together.

Ukraine Response

8/27/2024

"acting in alliance with the Spirit of love"

Picture
In early 2022, in the days immediately following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, humanitarian concerns and response focused on border assistance, transportation, secure shelter, sufficient and nutritious food, and financial support for those fleeing to join family and friends elsewhere. As the war persists into its third year, partners have focused on helping rebuild in-country and assisting those who have sought safer life in new places.

World Refugee Day

6/17/2024

toward a world where all are welcomed

Picture
WORLD REFUGEE DAY (June 20) is designated by the United Nations to recognize refugees around the globe, an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their stories, and to honor the perseverance and resilience shown in rebuilding their lives.

A refugee is someone who flees home and country owing to ‘a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion’. Many refugees are in exile to escape the effects of natural or human-made disasters.

Many communities of faith in the United States, including many Disciples, have been actively engaged in refugee response and resettlement for decades.

National Volunteer Week 2024

Picture
Volunteerism empowers individuals to find their purpose, to take their passion and turn it into meaningful change. When each of us, in our own way, answers the call to make a difference, we make progress in solving our most persistent problems, and create stronger communities and a more just society. - Points of Light Foundation, on the 50th Anniversary of National Volunteer Week

Week of Compassion connects volunteers to opportunities across the life of the ministry. We give thanks for the wide variety of people who are part of disaster relief, long-term recovery, and refugee response in congregations and communities.

update from Haiti

3/18/2024

Picture
As Florida Regional Minister Sandy Messick offers pastoral care for our Haitian Disciples in this time of upheaval and distress in Haiti, Week of Compassion is working with partners, especially with CWS (Church World Service), to address critical care and humanitarian response there in the ways we are able.
