connect with Week of Compassion in Memphis![]() There are so many ways to learn about – and be part of! – the work of Week of Compassion at this summer's General Assembly! ![]() Again this year, Week of Compassion is working with Help Build Hope to frame a house for survivors of the Winter 2021 tornadoes that devastated western Kentucky. During this PRE-EVENT of General Assembly 2025 in Memphis, we will frame an entire house together, with our build site hosts The BLVD (Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church). Come to Memphis a little early, to work and pray with other volunteers as we bring one family closer to moving home. Since the December 2021 tornadoes, Disciples have been praying, giving, and working to support tornado-affected communities in Western Kentucky. Responding immediately through Week of Compassion and our many Kentucky West Area congregations, Disciples have supported Regional leaders and ecumenical partners. In the years since, Week of Compassion has continued to rely on established relationships in a long-term commitment to recovery, rebuilding, and stability. The pre-event for General Assembly in Memphis, Tennessee, gives Disciples the chance to be up close and personal with this widespread recovery effort. HELP BUILD HOPE: Framing a House for Tornado Survivors build host: The BLVD (Mississippl Boulevard Christian Church) Friday, July 11 | 10:00am – 5:00pm To volunteer, in your General Assembly Registration, find Pre-Events. (Transportation to/from the Convention Center will be provided.) Help Build Hope welcomes volunteers 5 years and up, all skill levels and abilities. (In partnership with Disciples Men, a small group of volunteers is also be needed to prep and cut lumber on the morning of the build event, 8am-10am. E-mail us for more information.) Even with the steady flow of email and social media and a well-resourced website, sometimes there's just no replacing a good face-to-face conversation for insight, energy, and connection. Come see us in the Exhibit Hall at GA! As the natural climate continues to shift and the political climate changes rapidly, the work of Week of Compassion – the Disciples' disaser relief, refugee response, and sustainable development ministry – is always evolving too. Week of Compassion staff will be available through the Assembly for conversation, to share resources, answer questions, and offer 'teach-ins': five mini-workshops happening across Saturday, Sunday, and Monday afternoons. Explore everything from the status of refugee resettlement and how churches can care for immigrants and refugees, to asset mapping for congregations to know the best ways to serve in their local community. Learn about short- and long-term volunteering, and get snapshots from the field of local, national, and international responses, and what it looks like to be part of global humanitarian work in the present moment. No family gathering is complete without sharing a meal together! Join us for dinner, music, updates from partners and staff, and plenty of conversation around the table, before moving to the General Assembly Closing Worship together. Hear from Week of Compassion staff, and SPECIAL GUEST Alma Angelica Macias, Director of Casa De La Misericordia y Todas las Naciones, a mission in Nogales, Mexico, helping asylum seekers prepare for entry to the United States. Sister Lika brings a message of embodied hope from La Casa’s work of migrant accompaniment, and is well known to Disciples who have been part of the Arizona Disciples Border Initiative and Caminantes learning immersion experiences.
