Week of Compassion is in conversation with local churches and partners in areas where disasters are ongoing or have recently occurred. As needs are emerging, we are assessing potential for response. Updated 08/17/2023 On Jan. 12, a tornado outbreak caused damage in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. No damage to church buildings is reported by Disciples at this time, though some Disciples households have sustained damage to their homes. Week of Compassion is in close contact with leaders and partners in affected areas, responding to the needs of affected congregations, and supporting congregations with pastoral care, information, and grants as they provide assistance in their communities. - Federal disaster declaration-DR-4684-AL Read more about how Disciples are responding and how you can help! Local Contacts: Local Disciples congregations, Alabama/Northwest Florida Region, Georgia Region, Alabama VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster); Alabama/Northwest Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, Local Long-Term Recovery Groups Early Response: Week of Compassion provided solidarity grants for Disciples households affected by the tornadoes and assistance through local congregations that are providing emergency supplies and assistance for critical needs in their communities. Week of Compassion staff also worked to connect partners with resources and assistance information. Ongoing Engagement: Through a partnership with the United Methodist Church, Week of Compassion supported disaster case management for long-term recovery groups in 10 affected counties in Alabama. We have also provided direct long-term recovery support grants to local long-term recovery groups. We are in conversation with ecumenical partners about other long-term needs.
