preparing for extreme heat

5/30/2023

Picture
In recent years, we have witnessed and experienced the impact of extreme temperatures on the health and livelihoods of people within our communities across the US and Canada. In extreme heat, your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to sickness and even death. In fact, extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards.

We can prepare ourselves and our communities for extreme weather events and help save lives. Here are a few resources related to extreme heat preparedness you can reference or share with others.

For Individuals
  • Learn to recognize the signs of heat illness.
  • What should you do before Extreme Heat, which includes the Extreme Heat Safety Checklist in 9 languages (American Red Cross)
  • Extreme Heat Page, with information accessible in 16 languages (NC Ready)
  • Social Media Tool Kit

For Congregations
  • Often congregations become ‘Cooling Centers’ and networks of information to find places of respite from the heat. Find training to become an emergency rest center.
  • Encourage folks unable to afford cooling costs, weatherization or energy-related home repairs, to contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help.
  • Find a useful 2-page summary specifically for leaders of faith communities Preparing Congregations for hot weather hazards
