Domestic Disaster Response & Preparedness

When disasters strike, Week of Compassion is here to help:
before, during, and after.

* In order to protect volunteers and communities we serve during the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers should use caution, heed the guidance of public health officials, and pay close attention to protocols required before and while serving. All Week of Compassion volunteers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before serving.

Week of Compassion offers resources and training opportunities to help congregations prepare for and respond to disasters. Immediately following disasters in the United States and Canada, Week of Compassion works through local congregations and regions to provide guidance, connections, and resources for navigating disaster response. We invest the majority of our disaster response resources in long-term recovery, primarily for the purpose of repairing and rebuilding homes. In coordination with Disciples and ecumenical partners, Week of Compassion also supports opportunities for Disciples to offer hands-on assistance.

Tornadoes

5/27/2019

2019 - Dayton, Ohio

updated: 04/06/2022
Twenty-one tornadoes struck Ohio on Memorial Day 2019, including 11 in the greater Dayton area, damaging or destroying thousands of homes, including multiple apartment buildings. The displacement of renters exacerbated an existing shortage of affordable housing in the Greater Dayton area.

HOW DISCIPLES ARE INVOLVED
Local Contacts: Miami Valley Long-Term Recovery Operations Group, Ecumenical Partners, local congregations

Early Response: Week of Compassion provided solidarity grants to affected Disciples households.

Ongoing Engagement: Week of Compassion is collaborating with the Miami Valley Long-Term Recovery Operations Group, Brethren Disaster Ministries, UCC Disaster Ministries, and several local organizations to help address affordable housing needs exacerbated by the tornadoes. The Pathways to Homeownership Project in-fills vacant lots with affordable homes; with mentorship, financial coaching, and downpayment assistance, renters displaced by the tornadoes will have an opportunity to move into homeownership.

HOW TO HELP
Volunteer: - Week of Compassion collaborated with ecumenical partners to provide volunteer support in building homes as part of the Pathways to Homeownership Project. Week of Compassion volunteer efforts have concluded at this site.

Give to Week of Compassion: Designate US Storms and Fires

Pray: Continue to pray for the people of Ohio and our Week of Compassion partners.

Advocate: Advocate for policies that promote greater access to affordable housing, including affordable rental housing and opportunities for homeownership.
