Los Angeles

Picture
In early January 2025, Southern California was devastated by a series of destructive never-before-seen wildfires. Extreme heat, drought, and hurricane-force Santa Ana Winds led to the accelerated spread of fires in the surrounding Los Angeles area, most notably the Palisades and Eaton Fires. As winds made containment nearly impossible, these fires ravaged communities for over 21 days and resulted in catastrophic loss of life and property as well as extensive damage that displaced entire communities.

Rebuilding efforts are underway and Week of Compassion is working with San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity and First Christian Church of Torrance to receive volunteers to help with rebuilding efforts.

-- minimum age : 16
-- group size : 5-20
-- registration : suggested donation of $10/person/night that will go to FCCT to help cover utility usage.
-- housing : air mattresses at First Christian Church Torrance, showers on site
-- meals : responsibility of the group, with access to a full kitchen at FCCT

Single day, weekend, and week-long opportunities are available now for individuals or groups that do not need lodging. Housing will be available beginning January 2026 (except Holy Week and the month of July).

A Week of Compassion site host can be present to help guide your group by request January-March 2026.

Christmount

Picture
In late September of 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and moved across Georgia into the Appalachian mountain range. Helene deposited record-breaking amounts of rainfall across Western North Carolina, an area that does not have experience with hurricanes. This historic rainfall caused major flooding, downed trees, and mudslides that wreaked havoc on infrastructure, homes, and waterways.

Christmount Christian Assembly, the national conference center for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), located in Black Mountain, North Carolina experienced extensive damage.
Thanks to the hard work of locals and volunteers, repairs are well underway but more help is needed, and recovery efforts are ongoing at Christmount and in the surrounding community.

Week of Compassion is working with Christmount and community partners to continue to welcome volunteers for ongoing cleanup and rebuild efforts.

It is estimated that 300 of these homes include families with children.

Greater Pine Island

Picture
In September of 2022, the island was devastated by Hurricane Ian with 150 mph winds that swept through the island for over 12 hours. This was one of the most powerful storms to ever strike Florida. The island’s communities were devastated. Tragically, five lives were lost, and 90% of the buildings, including homes and businesses, sustained damage. A staggering 20 percent of these structures were classified by county officials as having “major damage,” while 3 percent were completely destroyed.

The island was further isolated when the road leading to the Little Pine Island bridge was washed away. Left without access to the mainland or any on-Island government or coordinating entity to address their immediate needs, Islanders and island-based nonprofits sprang into action. Neighbors rallied together, providing support and assistance to one another in the aftermath of the devastating storm.

Since then, the island has been hit by Idalia (2023), and Debby, Helene, and Milton (all 2024). Week of Compassion has partnered with Greater Pine Island Alliance (GPIA) Long-Term Recovery Group since 2022 and is now collaborating to refer volunteers to help with ongoing recovery efforts.

-- minimum age : 14
-- group size : ideal group size is 4-5; can accommodate larger groups, split into teams of 4-5 (each w/ transportation & strong group leader)
-- housing : handled case by case.
-- meals : responsibility of the group (sometimes local organizations provide lunches)

Dates for all locations are available upon request.

Over the last 10 years, the Greater Houston area has experienced multiple climate disasters. Eight of them were large enough to receive federal disaster declarations, including both a derecho windstorm and a hurricane in 2024.

The city has also seen countless localized and smaller scale disasters including severe storms, power outages, and industrial accidents. Week of Compassion is working with The Restoration Team to receive volunteers for repairs to homes damaged by one or more of these disasters: Hurricane Harvey (2017), Winter Storm (2021), summer derecho (2024), Hurricane Beryl (2024).

San Juan

Picture
In late September 2022, Hurricane Fiona made landfall in Puerto Rico, destroying homes, buildings, and systems still recovering from Hurricanes Irma and Maria five years earlier. Week of Compassion is partnering with Iglesia Cristiana Discípulos de Cristo en Puerto Rico, Techos Pa’ Mi Gente, and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to receive volunteers to continue supporting the recovery efforts following hurricanes Maria, Irma, and Fiona on the island.

In the words of leaders in the community:

It is our sincere hope that you will come to describe your journey as a 'mission pilgrimage.' More than a difference in semantics, we believe that by undertaking to make a mission pilgrimage, we more easily shift our perspective from 'What am I going to do?' to 'What is God going to do in and through me and those I meet?'

Picture
Teams will work in the San Juan metro area on roof repairs, as well as some other home repairs; teams may also work at the operations center, supporting the community garden or other resilience efforts.
-- minimum age : 14 – including 2 adults (21+) for every 5 minors
-- maximum group size : 16
-- registration : $60/person/day (includes housing, offset of building materials, & some on-island transportation)
-- housing : dorm style rooms at the operations center (San Juan)
-- meals : responsibility of the group
--
schedule : Groups typically arrive Sunday, work Monday-Friday, and depart on Saturday
