western North Carolina12/18/2024 Christmount![]() In late September of 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and moved across Georgia into the Appalachian mountain range. Helene deposited record-breaking amounts of rainfall across Western North Carolina, an area that does not have experience with hurricanes. This historic rainfall caused major flooding, downed trees, and mudslides that wreaked havoc on infrastructure, homes, and waterways. Christmount Christian Assembly, the national conference center for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), located in Black Mountain, North Carolina experienced extensive damage. Locals poured in to help, and now they are opening their doors to welcome volunteers to continue with recovery efforts. Week of Compassion is working with Christmount to Service-Learning Camps (weeks of June 1 and June 8) offer a volunteer opportunity that includes hands-on projects around the Christmount campus and in the wider community, as well as evening activities and sessions led by guest speakers. Traditional Volunteer Experience hosted by Week of Compassion (weeks of June 15 and June 22) will receive volunteers for ongoing cleanup and emerging rebuild efforts. Week of Compassion is partnering with multiple organizations to receive volunteers for home repair and rebuild. Week of Compassion is partnering with the Iglesia Cristiana Discípulos de Cristo en Puerto Rico, Techos Pa’ Mi Gente, and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to receive volunteers to continue supporting the recovery efforts following hurricanes Maria, Irma, and Fiona on the island.
