Storm Season Update

5/22/2024

Picture
With repeated severe weather and tornadoes across the plains, midwest, and south; flooding and windstorms in Texas; and other weather-related impacts across much of the U.S., the needs of our neighbors are great. Week of Compassion is connecting with Regional and local church leaders in affected areas and working with ecumenical partners to assess damage and coordinate response.

YOU can respond and help in a number of ways:

providing health care in Pakistan

In June 2022, a torrential monsoon season devastated Pakistan, bringing the worst flooding in modern history, and leaving almost incomprehensible damage across most of the country, with 33 million people flood-affected and 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance.

Week of Compassion responded through local ecumenical partners and will continue to do so for the long-term.
We lift up the ongoing work of our partners in Pakistan and the surrounding region, including programs for health care and support – the focus of a recent visit by Executive Director Rev. Vy Nguyen and three Disciples colleagues. Last month, Rev. Brandon Johnson shared insights about girls' education in Afghanistan. We are grateful to share another meaningful reflection, this time from Rev. Dr. Caleb Lines, Senior Minister of University Christian Church, San Diego CA.

partners respond to flooding in Libya

Picture
DanChurchAid (DCA), a Week of Compassion partner through ACT Alliance, remains steadily at work responding to the recent overwhelming floods in Libya. Maneuvering through neighboring regions and hard-to-access roads, distributions arrived, bringing tools to aid the search and recovery, along with basic supplies for those displaced.

In Derna, multiple schools are being used as shelters for displaced persons. After assessment with local caseworkers, items were packed into dignity kits appropriate to each family. Additional shipments are arriving at the shelters weekly, and kits will soon expand to include items needed for winterization.

DCA is further assisting with makeshift medical centers as partners have been inundated and running out of supplies.

As a DCA staffer said, “It was an important moment when the items arrived. They are much needed … The tools are so important for the search teams, and the items for those who lost their homes and belongings, it is making a big difference…but we will do more and keep going. It’s just the beginning.”

partners work following massive flooding

Picture
As the death toll continues to rise following the catastrophic September 10 floods in Libya, we long to respond, to help, to be of assistance in any way.

Week of Compassion remains in close touch with our global and ecumenical partners, listening to the reports from the affected areas, discerning the most effective ways to respond in the immediate term, and planning for the long-term recovery sure to come.

Pakistan Floods - one year later

9/7/2023

greetings & thanks from a partner

This summer marked one year since devastating flooding in Pakistan, which saw 33 million people flood-affected, 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance, and 1.8 million houses damaged or destroyed.

Disciples responded through Week of Compassion and ecumenical partner Community World Service Asia. (You can find that story here.) CWSA Regional Director Marvin Parvez sent a video greeting with an update, and gratitude for the work Disciples do to alleviate suffering throughout the world.

Week of Compassion continues to respond to the Pakistan Floods

Picture
Since June, a torrential monsoon season has devastated Pakistan, bringing the worst flooding in modern history, and leaving almost incomprehensible damage across most of the country:
  • 33 million people flood-affected
  • 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance
  • 1.8 million houses damaged or destroyed
  • 750,000 livestock killed
  • 1500 estimated flood-related deaths, and 13,000 injured
  • 4000 miles of roads and nearly 300 bridges destroyed
  • 17,500 schools completely or partially damaged

Week of Compassion is responding through local ecumenical partners and will continue to do so for the long-term. With such massive impact and devastation, an expansive and evolving response will be needed for years to come. The data only show one snapshot of the circumstance; the true impact on homes, livelihoods, and emotions is seen in the people themselves.

Taking Shelter on a River Bank

an update on Pakistan floods and response

Picture
Since mid-June, 30 million people in Pakistan (about 15% of the total population) have been directly affected by the monsoon rains and flooding. The country has received three times the annual rainfall compared to the last 30 years, and some villages as much as five times more. The current floods are forcing comparisons to 2010, Pakistan’s worst recorded flood, which brought more than 2000 casualties and one-fifth of the nation was underwater.
