A Letter on Ukraine3/24/2022  Grace and peace, Disciples. Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, and with our deepest gratitude for each of you and for this ministry.
In the first days after the February 24 start of the Russian attacks on Ukraine, the humanitarian response, led especially by faith-focused communities, was immediate and significant. Week of Compassion has been in constant contact with our ecumenical partners at home and around the world. partnering to respond in Ukraine3/15/2022  For us, like for many others, every day Ukraine is on our hearts.
So begins a letter from Pieter and Nora Kalkan, missionaries to the Czech Republic, writing to their church family in the (American Baptist) International Ministries. Through IM, and the European Baptist Federation, Week of Compassion is on the ground in Ukraine and surrounding nations, responding to the emergent needs of those fleeing the country, and those who remain internally displaced by the war. the latest on Ukraine3/4/2022  Just more than a week ago, Russia moved military forces into Ukraine, attacking more than a dozen city centers. From the beginning, we have prayed together, and immediately engaged with our global and domestic ecumenical partners to respond to emergent needs and craft an ongoing and long-term response.

In the days since, we have joined with you and with people around the world in praying for peace. We have also joined our ecumenical partners to put those prayers into action.
In the first few days, it has been reported that nearly half a million Ukrainians have been displaced, fleeing to safety in nearby countries as military attacks consume their homes. Week of Compassion is in frequent contact with our partners in Europe, who are monitoring the rapidly developing situation and planning for the displacement of people and the humanitarian needs that are likely to come from this invasion. As we learn more, we will share updates about how Disciples will extend care and compassion to those affected. We join with you and with people around the world in praying for peace.
Ever Loving God, Today we are filled with many emotions in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Humanity has once again chosen selfishness and death, when we know you to be the God of abundance and life. |
