Be the Neighbor missions include direct service, relational ministry, immersion experiences, and education. The key question they ask: What would the world look like if we all took seriously the idea of being a good neighbor? repsonding in Libya9/18/2023 partners work following massive floodingAs the death toll continues to rise following the catastrophic September 10 floods in Libya, we long to respond, to help, to be of assistance in any way. Week of Compassion remains in close touch with our global and ecumenical partners, listening to the reports from the affected areas, discerning the most effective ways to respond in the immediate term, and planning for the long-term recovery sure to come. helping churches think ahead for disaster readinessWeek of Compassion is part of the Willing to Respond network, providing a registry of willing congregations and a library of vetted resources, to connect churches and organizations for disaster preparedness and response. To mark National Preparedness Month (September), Week of Compassion is sharing the current issue of the Willing to Respond newsletter, sent every other month to registered Disciples congregations. WTR also provides churches with training, tips, and tools to reduce risk and be ready to assist neighbors when disaster strikes. For information and to register as a WTR congregation, go to WillingToRespond.org Pakistan Floods - one year later9/7/2023 greetings & thanks from a partnerThis summer marked one year since devastating flooding in Pakistan, which saw 33 million people flood-affected, 6.4 million in need of humanitarian assistance, and 1.8 million houses damaged or destroyed. Disciples responded through Week of Compassion and ecumenical partner Community World Service Asia. (You can find that story here.) CWSA Regional Director Marvin Parvez sent a video greeting with an update, and gratitude for the work Disciples do to alleviate suffering throughout the world. Hawai'i Fires8/15/2023 responding with partners on MauiOn Tuesday, August 8, gale-force winds rushed along the mountains of Maui, bringing down power lines, igniting grasslands, and contributing to what has become “America’s deadliest wildfire in more than a century”. An extremely dry summer, and winds as a result of Hurricane Dora, exacerbated the flames and the toll on land and people continues to mount. Hawaii Fires : pray, give, stay8/14/2023 We continue to receive your many questions and heartfelt concerns for our neighbors on Maui and the continuously heartbreaking news in light of the hurricane-fed fires that have decimated the island in the last week. RIGHT NOW it is important to PRAY, GIVE, and STAY. In this moment, Disciples, our call is to support those affected, with the fervency of our prayers and the generosity of our financial contributions. |
