2023 Volunteer Opportunities

2/3/2023

Picture

Week of Compassion is grateful for all the ways Disciples are at work. This ministry is only possible because of relationships, generosity, and commitment to each other and to the call of Christ to care for our neighbors. Here are just a few ways you can connect with volunteer opportunities, trainings, and events over the next several months.

BE A WEEK OF COMPASSION VOLUNTEER
Volunteering in disaster-affected communities is a powerful way to help our neighbors recover and bring hope in the midst of struggle. We have seen Disciples make the greatest impact by volunteering where recovery efforts are ongoing, once the community has had a chance to identify their unmet needs and get organized.

We have active volunteer sites in Kentucky, Louisiana, and North Carolina. For more details and registration information go to our Volunteer page and  complete a Volunteer Interest Form.

JOIN US AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR A ‘SERVICE SERVICE’!
Be part of worship to bless the builders, the resources, and the homeowners, and then help frame a house right in the Exhibit Hall at General Assembly!

Join Week of Compassion on Sunday morning July 30, 8am - 12noon for worship and work, or stop by anytime during the rest of Assembly (through Tuesday August 1) to write words of blessing within the walls.

Add this to your General Assembly registration (find us in 'other sessions') and more information will follow soon!

HELP CARE FOR CHILDREN FOLLOWING DISASTERS
Children’s Disaster Services is a Church of the Brethren Disaster Ministry that involves volunteers from many faith communities who provide a calm, safe and reassuring presence in the midst of the chaos that follows disaster by setting up and operating special childcare centers in disaster locations.

CDS provides specialized training for all its volunteers. The CDS Volunteer Training is a comprehensive 25-hour event that uses applied, experiential activities to help the participants integrate their learning. Training events are coming up in February, March, and April.

TAKE A TRIP WITH HARVEST OF HOPE
The Society of St. Andrew brings people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste, and build caring communities by offering nourishment to hungry neighbors. The Society of St. Andrew operates various programs to strategically and efficiently coordinate volunteers, growers, and recipient agencies to glean and share farm-fresh food with families in need— who might otherwise go without access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Overnight, educational mission trips - like spring break trips for college students and young adults! - are part of the Harvest of Hope program.
