Hurricane Fiona and Puerto Rico9/20/2022 Two days after Hurricane Fiona (September 18) made landfall in Puerto Rico, updates are beginning to come in, especially from the south and west of the island, with reports of damage to homes, some damage to churches, and many roads still unpassable. Week of Compassion is in conversation with Iglesia Cristiana (Discipulos de Cristo) and with Puerto Rico VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) for a coordinated response. While utilities and power are being restored in some areas, as of September 20, most residents remain without. Despite damage to roads and communication networks, our Discipulos colleagues are working to contact local Disciples pastors, especially in Ponce, Guayanilla, and Cabo Rojo. They will continue assessing damage and needs among affected churches and families, and pray together in the face of countless challenges. As the hurricane moves through the Caribbean, impacting neighboring countries, Week of Compassion continues to engage partners and will respond as needed. Rev. Hilda Robles-Floran, General Pastor of Iglesia Cristiana is grateful for the way Disciples connect, support, and remain in prayer: “In unity is the strength, joy and discernment necessary for decision-making and action to follow according to God’s purposes! Thank you for the blessing of having each one of you close at this time. The Lord always makes abundant provision in times of need." Contributions to Week of Compassion designated ‘Hurricanes 2022’ will go toward this response.
